Operational Management

M-Switch has a number of flexible management tools, to support monitoring, and control of an operational system. This page gives an overview of the following management tools:

Where appropriate links are provided in each section leading to further information.

M-Switch Operational Management Summary

M-Switch Operational Management covers all of the variants of the M-Switch product, including both Internet and X.400 variants. Operational management of M-Switch has a number of manager visible components:

  • MConsole, a graphical console that enables monitoring and controlling one or more copies of M-Switch.
  • Message Operator Interface (Web) covering operational statistics summary, message tracking and quarantine management.
  • Event Log Viewing GUI, using a client/server protocol, supporting event log viewing monitoring and searching.
  • Monitoring using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and the MADMAN (Mail and Directory Management) MIBs (Management Information Base).

Configuration Management

Operational management, described on this page is one half of Message system management. Operational management is complemented by the extensive Configuration Management of Isode's messaging product set, which is described here.

Switch Operational Management (SOM)

Isode's approach to operational management is client server, as described in the white paper "The Isode Management Architecture: Client/Server and Directory". This is implemented in M-Switch using the Switch Operational Management Architecture (SOMA), as illustrated below.

Access to M-Switch management information is through the SOMD server. This is accessed by management tools, built over the SOMClient API. The central capabilities provided by SOM are:

  • Authenticated client access, with per user controls on services available (e.g., access to message content and envelope information).
  • Log access, monitoring and searching.
  • Queue status information.
  • Access to messages in the M-Switch queue.
  • Deletion and other control operations on messages in the M-Switch queue.
  • Access to messages in the message archive.
  • Access to messages in the quarantine store, and ability to release messages.
  • Message (re) submission.

SOM provides the framework for implementing MConsole, the Log Viewer, and quarantine message resubmission.
