X.400 Messaging

Our X.400 Messaging products provide a reliable, secure message handling solution for Aviation, Government, and EDI businesses. Our X.400 solution comprises a high-performance MTA, Message Store, and Messaging Gateway alongside API’s that allow customers to build our X.400 products into a larger deployment.

X.400 is a family of flexible and secure messaging protocols specified by CCITT. X.400 is used in specific industries, in particular to transfer EDI and to support Aviation ground-to-ground messaging (AMHS). The family of products described in this section is ideal for these markets.

Military Messaging also uses X.400 as part of the STANAG 4406 specification. Isode solutions for military messaging are described in the Message Switch and User Messaging sections.

The diagram below shows how our X.400 Messaging products interact with each other and external systems.

The primary Isode X.400 Products are:

M-Switch X.400 is an X.400 Message Transfer Agent (MTA) that switches messages using the X.400 P1 protocol. It has no local users and is designed to switch messages in an X.400 network.
MConsole is the M-Switch management UI, providing monitoring and control functionality.
M-Switch MIXER is a specialized variant of M-Switch X.400 providing conversion to internet email using SMTP and following the MIXER standard.
M-Switch User Server supports local users and connects other MTAs using the X.400 P1 protocol. It provides message submission and delivery using the X.400 P3 protocol.
M-Store, is an X.400 Message store that provides User Agent (X.400 Client) access to messages using the X.400 P7 protocol.
X.400 Client API provides client-side support for the X.400 P3 and P7 protocols. It facilitates third-party development of X.400 User Agents.
X.400 Gateway API provides an API that accesses M-Switch X.400. It facilitates the development of gateways between other protocols, such as the aviation AFTN protocol, and X.400.

M-Switch X.400 is a high-performance, versatile Message Transfer Agent (MTA). It can be deployed either to support local users or as a gateway, switching messages between other MTAs. M-Switch X.400 is widely used in Civil Aviation, EDI, and Military environments.

X.400 Message Store

X.400 clients (User Agents) use the X.400 P7 protocol to access a Message Store. It serves as an intermediary between User Agents and the Message Transfer Agent, accepting delivery of messages on the user’s behalf and storing them for subsequent retrieval.

SMTP/X.400 Gateway

M-Switch MIXER is a high-performance Message Switch, providing conversion between X.400 and Internet email according to the MIXER specifications.

X.400 Gateway API

When building a complex messaging system, there is often a requirement to integrate X.400 messaging services with other messaging or telematic services. For example integration of a military X.400 system with ACP127 Messaging, integration of an air traffic messaging system based on the AMHS standard with legacy AFTN Messaging or integration of a messaging system with facsimile or telex services. Isode offers an X.400 Gateway API suitable for all of these applications.

X.400 provides an extensive and powerful set of features, and as a consequence, generic approaches to integrate applications are complex. Many applications built over X.400 have quite simple requirements from the underlying service. Isode’s X.400 Client API provides a simple abstraction of the X.400 functionality to meet the needs of client applications.

SOM Client API

Isode’s approach to operational management is client/server; in M-Switch products, this is implemented using the Switch Operational Management (SOM) architecture. Isode management tools are built over the SOM Client API, which is also available as a development kit.
